HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 2009--General Cable Corporation (NYSE: BGC) reported today that its
subsidiary, Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke GmbH (NSW), and its repeater
technology partner, Fujitsu, have been awarded a more than 1,000 mile
submarine fiber optic communications link project in Indonesia.
The project, called JaKa2LaDeMa, was awarded by PT TELEKOMUNIKASI
INDONESIA, Tbk (PT TELCOM) and is the first high-bandwidth optical-fiber
submarine cable system for the Indonesian islands of Kalimantan and
Sulawesi, as well as Java, Bali and Lombok. The cable system was awarded
on a turnkey basis and is valued at over $100 million. Fujitsu will
provide state of the art terminal equipment, repeaters, branching unit
system integration and associated services, while NSW will manufacture
the cable and provide other required services, such as site survey,
marine installation and civil works. The value of the project to be
recognized by NSW is approximately $80 million and is expect to be
completed in the first quarter of 2010.
General Cable acquired NSW in April 2007 and began an investment program
to expand the capability of the facility to include submarine power
cables and repeatered submarine communications cable. NSW is located on
a tributary of the North Sea, with its own deep-sea pier. With the
investment program nearly complete, NSW is well positioned to address
all aspects of submarine cable needs for the expanding communications,
offshore wind farm and energy exploration markets.
